Ask a Massachusetts license question. Get a cited answer.

Type your question in plain English. Answers come from Massachusetts motor vehicle law — M.G.L. Chapter 90 and RMV regulations — explained simply, with the source cited.

Before you do anything else

Three common mistakes that make an RMV problem harder.

When the process is confusing, it is easy to act too quickly, rely on incomplete information, or arrive without the documents your situation requires.

MISTAKE #1

Paying the citation "to get it over with"

Resolving a citation without first understanding the consequences can affect your driving record. Review the notice, your options, and the applicable process before deciding what to do.

MISTAKE #2

Calling your state rep for help

Calling multiple offices may produce information, but it does not replace preparing the correct documents and following the process that applies to your situation.

MISTAKE #3

Walking into the hearing unprepared

Missing or incomplete documents can delay the process or prevent your request from being fully considered. Preparation matters.

The goal: Replace guesswork with an organized checklist, a clear timeline, and a better understanding of what comes next.

What happens if you do nothing?

We won't invent scary numbers — but here's the honest truth about waiting:

Deadlines pass quietly

The windows on your notice close whether or not you've read it. Some — like chemical test refusals — are measured in days, and a strong case that arrives late usually can't be heard.

Nothing resolves itself

A suspension stays until its requirements are met. Time alone doesn't clear it — and waiting often adds steps, fees, and months.

Driving anyway makes it worse

Operating after suspension is a new, separate matter — and it makes everything that follows harder, including hardship consideration.

An honest answer

Do you need an attorney — or can RAPID help?

Most RMV matters are administrative — they're about understanding the process, preparing correctly, and showing up organized. Some genuinely need a lawyer. Here's the honest breakdown:

RAPID is built for this

  • Understanding what your notice actually requires
  • Organizing documents before you submit them
  • Preparing for your telephone hearing
  • Reinstatement steps, citations, and deadline tracking

Talk to an attorney when…

  • You're facing criminal charges, like an OUI court case
  • A fraud or credential complaint has been filed against you
  • Your immigration status could be affected
  • You need representation in court or on a formal appeal
💬 On every callback, if we believe you need an attorney, we'll say so — plainly and immediately — and we can introduce you to a vetted Massachusetts attorney. That honesty is the whole point of RAPID.

Straight answers

The questions everyone asks.

Can I get my reinstatement fees waived?
No — and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. Reinstatement fees are set by statute and cannot be waived or removed by anyone at the RMV. Plan for the fee as part of getting your license back. The one narrow exception: if the Board of Appeals overturns the underlying sanction entirely and it comes off your record, the associated fee can go with it — but that's a rare outcome of winning an appeal, not a waiver anyone can grant.
M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 33
Should I just pay my ticket and move on?
Be very careful. Paying a citation in Massachusetts is a responsible finding — it goes on your record as a surchargeable event, the same as losing a hearing. Three surchargeable events within two years triggers a mandatory suspension. Important: completing the National Safety Council course before that suspension takes effect prevents it entirely — and avoids the reinstatement fee. Once the suspension issues, that window closes. In most cases, appealing — even a small ticket — protects you far more than the $25 filing fee costs.
Will contacting my state representative help?
No. A constituent email generates a status update from the RMV — it does not change outcomes, timelines, or decisions. We'd rather tell you that upfront than let you waste weeks on it. Your time is better spent preparing correctly.
Are RMV hearings in person?
No — RMV suspension hearings are conducted by telephone, scheduled online. The call may come from a blocked number, any time within your scheduled window. Missing that call can set you back a month. We prepare you so that call goes the way it should.
What's a Substance Abuse Evaluation and why does mine matter so much?
In cases involving alcohol or drugs, the RMV often requires a clinical Substance Abuse Evaluation. A strong one includes validated screening tools, a review of your police report, and a clear low-risk conclusion — a weak or vague one gets cases denied and sends you back to square one. We review evaluations against exactly what hearings require, before you submit.
Is RAPID a law firm? Do you represent me?
No. RAPID provides education, strategy, and navigation — not legal representation. We help you understand the process and prepare for it. If your case needs an attorney, we'll tell you honestly and can point you to qualified Massachusetts attorneys we work with.
How is this different from hiring an attorney?
An attorney represents you — and typically charges $3,500–$8,000 for an RMV matter. RAPID gives you expert preparation and guidance for a flat monthly rate. Many people handle their hearing confidently with RAPID alone; others use RAPID alongside their attorney. Attorneys themselves subscribe to RAPID to strengthen their own cases.
Falam português? ¿Hablan español?
Sim — atendemos a comunidade brasileira em português. Sí — atendemos a la comunidad hispana en español. Our intake form and our team support English, Portuguese, and Spanish, because a confusing process shouldn't be harder because of language.
What if my case actually needs to go to court or needs an attorney?
We'll tell you honestly if that's the case. As a Club member, you get priority introduction to our vetted network of Massachusetts attorneys — many of whom offer Club members a free or reduced initial consultation. RAPID does not pay attorney fees or share in legal fees; we simply make sure you're connected to the right person quickly, without guessing or starting from zero.
